You finally bought a brand new, expensive 5G smartphone. You put your old Airtel SIM card inside, expecting to instantly download movies in seconds. You look at the top corner of your screen, waiting for the magic "5G" logo to appear...

But it just says 4G. Or even worse, LTE. You step out onto your balcony, you restart your phone, you turn airplane mode on and off, but nothing happens. The Airtel 5G Plus logo refuses to show up.

This is extremely frustrating, but it is actually a very common problem. The good news is that your phone is probably fine, and your SIM card is not broken. Usually, it is just a missing setting or a step you forgot to complete. Let's go through the exact steps to get your 5G working today.

Once you finally get that 5G logo showing up, you might notice your games are still lagging. If that happens, jump over to our guide on getting 20ms ping on Airtel to fix your gaming connection.

STEP 1: DID YOU "CLAIM" YOUR 5G OFFER?

This is the number one reason why Airtel 5G does not work for most people. Unlike 4G, Airtel 5G does not just activate itself automatically when you buy a new phone. You have to manually tell Airtel that you want it.

How to Claim:

  1. Connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network (since your mobile data might be slow right now).
  2. Download the official Airtel Thanks App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  3. Log in with your Airtel mobile number and OTP.
  4. Scroll down on the main screen until you see a banner that says "Claim Unlimited 5G Data".
  5. Tap on it and claim the offer for zero cost.

Within 15 minutes, you will receive an SMS from Airtel confirming that your 5G services are active.

STEP 2: CHECK YOUR PHONE NETWORK SETTINGS

Even if Airtel turns on 5G from their side, your phone might still be locked to 4G to save battery. You need to manually tell your phone to start searching for 5G towers.

For Android Users: Go to Settings > Mobile Network > Select your Airtel SIM > Preferred Network Type. Make sure you select the highest option available, which usually says "5G/4G/3G (Auto)".

For iPhone Users: Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Change the setting from 4G/LTE to "5G Auto" or "5G On".

STEP 3: THE SECRET 300GB LIMIT (FUP)

Let's say your 5G was working perfectly for two weeks, but today it suddenly stopped showing or became incredibly slow. This is likely due to the Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

Airtel advertises "Unlimited 5G Data", but it is not truly unlimited forever. If you use your phone as a hotspot and download 300GB of data in a single month (commercial usage limit), Airtel will temporarily throttle your speed or drop you back to the 4G network until your next recharge cycle begins. Always keep an eye on your data usage in the Airtel Thanks app.

STEP 4: RESET NETWORK SETTINGS

If you have claimed the offer and your settings are correct, but the 5G logo is still hiding, your phone's internal antenna settings might be confused. A network reset fixes this easily.

Go to your phone settings and search for "Reset Network Settings". Click it. (Do not worry, this will not delete your photos or apps. It will only erase your saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections). Once your phone restarts, it will fetch a fresh, clean signal from the nearest Airtel tower.

FAQ:-

Do I need to buy a new 5G SIM card from the Airtel store?

No. If you have a normal Airtel 4G SIM card, it is already fully compatible with the 5G network. You do not need to visit a store or pay money to upgrade your physical SIM card.

Can I get Airtel 5G on a 155 Rupees recharge plan?

No. Airtel requires you to have a basic minimum recharge plan to be eligible for the free Unlimited 5G offer. Usually, this means you need an active recharge of Rs 239 or higher. Check the Airtel app for current plan rules.

Why does my 5G drop to 4G when I go inside my bedroom?

5G radio waves are very fast, but they are also very weak when it comes to passing through solid objects. Thick concrete walls and closed doors easily block 5G signals, forcing your phone to drop down to the stronger, older 4G network.
